Getting started learning about the API - does anyone have any examples?

As mentioned in the subject line, I get the concept of API and how it can be used. And I want to start figuring out how to automate some things on my server. But I have never written code that leverages any API. So, I'm wondering if any of you power users would be willing to share any example coding projects you've done (remove any sensitive information, of course), just so I can see what a known, working example looks like and maybe I can build from there. Any help or guidance is much appreciated, thx!
