How easy is it to migrate to another server?

Post by naked_eskimo »

Right now I am hosting my server on an esx vm in my basement. It's a Windows 2008 R2 vm with plenty of RAM and cpu. Due to social distancing my player base is getting rather large and the server is often used. My concern is not around cpu/ram, but more if my esx host crashed, or my power went out, or my ISP barfed. If any of this happened in the middle of a tournament, I'd be embarrassed and it would not be fun to deal with.

With that in mind, I purchased a low cost Windows vps (4 GB RAM/2 vCPU) for $20/month. With a small (30 ish) player base, this should handle the load fine. Is it simple to migrate an install from my Windows 2008 vm to my Windows 2016 vps vm?

Thank you

That was super simple!

The server went from an old Dell R710 in my basement to a vps in New Jersey in about 15 minutes or less!

Thanks
