Amazon Web Services for Free and Poker Mavens

Post by social »

I am trying to understand why using Amazon free for a year would not be a great solution for many Poker Mavens enthusiasts:
http://aws.amazon.com/free/

But I do find their services hard to figure out, in terms of what you need.
Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2)

750 hours of Amazon EC2 Linux t2.micro instance usage (1 GiB of memory and 32-bit and 64-bit platform support) – enough hours to run continuously each month*
750 hours of Amazon EC2 Microsoft Windows Server† t2.micro instance usage (1 GiB of memory and 32-bit and 64-bit platform support) – enough hours to run continuously each month*
At the bottom of the page, however, there is the following restriction:
"† The following Windows variants are not eligible for the free tier: Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 with SQL Server Web, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 R2 with SQL Server Standard, Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 64-bit for Cluster Instances and Microsoft Windows 2008 R2 SQL Server 64-bit for Cluster Instances.
"

I do not know how to interpret that , as I know nothing about Windows Servers (or a lot of other stuff, for that mattter!).

Can anybody explain the pros and cons of using that Amazon Offer?

Or even how to do it?

Thanks.

My guess (and it's only a guess) is that the SQL Server option (which you wouldn't need anyway) is what disqualifies it from the free tier. Do they list other Windows Server options without that?

No, they are vague about Windows Server options on the page which I linked to...I find the whole thing vague.

If there are any other members who have successfully used Amazon WBS for Poker Mavens, then I would be glad to pay a consulting fee for assistance in setting it up.

@social I just set up an EC2 instance using AWS. I used the Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Base AMI (Amazon Machine Image). It's listed as "Free tier eligible" and is towards the bottom as you scroll down when creating an instance. I wasn't charged anything for this instance also...

If you have problems setting up the instance this video seems like it could be helpful

Hope that helps!
