WIN Server Questions

Postby adoni » Mon Oct 13, 2014 10:44 pm

I got the script running on a remote Win Server

Now I have a few questions about Win Servers since you're a windows maven

Is there a windows server panel you recommend? Cpanel has a panel they are phasing out, so the host offered it to me for free understanding it has no support.

Is there a plesk panel or something?

Right now the server is running the script off of IP's, so now I need to install a DNS server, if I use the temporary cpanel that should do it ok, if not, then what would you recommend as a panel to easily do stuff like set up a dns and then add accounts etc.

Any thoughts you have on how to actually operate a windows server I would appreciate it.

I got a Windows 2008 Server

So that's where I am now, once I have a windows server that actually resolves dns and a panel to do stuff like add scripts and domains and certs, then I can upgrade the script to the SSL version.

Without dns resolving on a server, there's no way to do ssl off an IP only is there?

So that's where we are at, finally got a remote windows desktop running the script is fine off an IP but now we need to get that server resolving and no one wants to support a win server in NL or Iceland

haha

I'm not kidding it was please use Linux it's all we know

I connect to mine through the "Remote Desktop Connection" app included with all copies of Windows. When connected, it operates just like a normal desktop Windows PC.

You probably could, assuming a certificate authority would sign an IP-only cert. But I wouldn't recommend it because you can't take it with you if you changed servers.

No opinion on control panels for win server 2008?

The only servers we've done in 20 years are linux, and since later 1990's all I use is cpanel

I know cpanel had a win version but they dropped it

I think Plesh has paralles

Then there's a bunch of freebie stuff

All I need is basic stuff, dns server (which I know is included the MS version but never used it before), creating cert keys and tracking them and then IP assignment and domain name hosting

Plus maybe auto installs of a few things like WP for any domain

Now that I got a win server I thought I'd turn it into a real server and run virtual domains off some of the IP's

So if you or anyone has experience with win panels let me know what you think is a decent solution

Seems the support for win servers is very light in Nederlands and Iceland, the first few companies I tried all had issues just getting a remote desktop to run on a win server, all they know is linux kinda like me

I've never used one on a Windows server since I always use them like a desktop PC where I have root access. I've only used cpanel on managed shared linux web sites where I wasn't allowed to install my own software.

We run a bunch of linux servers with ssh and whm and cpanel

I think we're going to use zpanel since it is a github project

So it's just installing it and then configuring it

I was hoping Ken had run some full window servers doing dns and stuff

But it looks like he hasn't

So once zPanel is working I'll update the post to any issues we had so someone else trying to run PM on a windows server can see any issues we had

Heck, it took hours for the hosting company tech to figure out why we couldn't do basic remote desktop control

They gave us a login and pw and if you copy and pass these generated passwords they don't work

Right now the server is going through an update to get all the patches

Then we'll set up the basic windows stuff like dns server and such and then try to install zpanel

It may take a while but it will be done, it's just a server and all the scripts are from MS with the panel being a github project that needs MS virtual runtime latest version to work

So hopefully zpanal will do the trick

If not I have some admins that can try to fix zpanel if we run into issues

All the admins I spoke to thought the original remote desktop hangup was them not having a port open

It took them a couple of hours to give me a valid port

Then it took a few more tries of not typing in the pw before the hosting company said type it in no copy and paste

Really i can understand what r u doing my friend :)
run a poker website based on poker-mavens is so easy and need some recourse ,
but Cpanel-SSH-zpanel-Linux Server &&& ... , what r u doing ?
in windows server you can install a wampserver and put your PHP codes on it and run your website ,
you can use more options , for ex : use 2 windows server , 1-for website 2-for game server and then connect their
and more options ...

but i see forum every hour and see your posts ,really i cant understand what r u doing :)

use a programmer that know about poker-mavens and that programming , its better
your working with money , so need a SMART and GOOD programmer

The only domain name related activity I've had to do is enter my host's name servers at GoDaddy. Nothing was required on the server itself from what I remember. Certainly nothing that required a control panel.

we want to run PM with a domain name and and an SSL

That means a real windows server with a functioning dns and a cert

Yes it's very easy to install on a local windows machine, very easy

But a local windows computer is not resolving http, dns and ssl certs

The only thing that will do all that is a full blown windows server that has dns and a ssl and http and smtp

Most people get a domain they host it for noting on shared hosting shared IP you can't even get an ssl for those

You want to host on a windows server, almost no hosting companies in Iceland or Nederlands where you host casinos are doing win servers with dns and ssl set up

They give you a windows server box with no control panel

If they had a cpanel installed, great, could login and create the domain and cert like I have done thousands of times on a linux server running cpanel

Most installs of PM are for fun on IP's, then you have a few casinos like SWC

So until you try to have an ssl cert on a windows server resolving right to a domain and not an ip address, all you have done is a fun install of PM that you can do on any windows machine connected to a router

So anyone actually trying to resolve PM to a windows server over seas with an ssl cert installed will understand the thread

Until you do that type of install you don't understand how hard it is to find a win server to run this in a country you won't be harassed in

My demo site (a cheap Windows VPS) is running under SSL on a domain name right here:

https://www.pm-demo.com:8087

Getting the domain name was simply a matter of buying one at GoDaddy, typing in the name servers from my hosting provider (Atlantic.net), and waiting for that to propagate around the world.

But a local windows computer is not resolving http, dns and ssl certs

Poker Mavens is a simple HTTP server all on its own and (Gold edition) handles the SSL connection using OpenSSL. All you have to do it tell it where your cert files are. I have a utility for creating a cert request:
