You have to replace it with another avatar - it should be possible to remove entirely.

How exactly did you remove it (or try to)?

It's impossible (apparently) to change the file once you've uploaded it to something that isn't another picture file.

You mean setting the Avatar File to an empty string via the API?

No, I mean attempting to edit it within the Accounts interface.

Ok, I see the problem. The file open dialog isn't allowing a blank value. That must have happened when I switched to the grid format. I'll fix that in the next update. In the mean time you can use the remote admin interface to blank that out or just set the Avatar Index value and the file will be ignored.

It doesn't quite ignore it - if you allow changing avatars and they have an avatar set in the custom avatar spot, they have the ability to change their Avatar Index to 0, restoring the image.

I should add that this is a feature that is good and that we want to keep - it allows people to set their avatars temporarily to something else while preserving their custom avatar.

Thanks for the fix, that'll be helpful.

Now fixed in 4.39
